When I was 35, I went to the doctor with shingles. I wasn't in the hospital, and I wasn't falling apart. Or at least that's what I told myself. I was just running hard, the way a lot of us do. Adrenaline for breakfast. Push through. Figure it out later. My body had a different opinion. I thought about that season this week while recording with my friend Brian Kiser. Brian is a Chick-fil-A Owner-Operator in Greensboro and one of the men in The Arena. In his late 30s, stress put him in the hospital. What he learned there is the same thing I'm still learning: you can't control everything. At some point you have to open your hands and say, "Lord, this is Yours." Brian said something else that stopped me. When things are hard at home, it's easy to lean into work, because that's where the praise is. Your team loves you. The numbers look good. Meanwhile, the stuff that actually matters is quietly slipping. I've done that. Maybe you have too. (Images below from one of our gatherings of The Arena at The Ranch.) Brian and Ashley have kept a weekly date night for 15 years. Not fancy ones, usually. Cheap tacos. Ice cream when money was tight. One night in the mall food court. Some nights she's frustrated with him and it's tense. They go anyway. It reminded me of the years when Jessica and I had small girls at home and a tight budget, and date night was a movie at the house and me running out for Chipotle. It wasn't glamorous and we did not add the guacamole. It counted. Last week we went to a spot with live Friday night music, something we do once or twice a year. Different season, same commitment: put it on the calendar and show up. That's really what this whole episode is about. Showing up. At home, at work, and with God, especially when it would be easier to look like you've got it all together. If you're carrying more than anyone knows right now, I'd love for you to hear Brian's story. Listen, subscribe, and share. Learn more about The Arena and apply to join. Seats are limited. |

Yesterday I celebrated turning 46. I was overwhelmed with the love and support I received. Jessica and the girls showered goodness on me. I share the following from a posture of gratitude and I want to encourage you wherever you are on the journey, to hold fast. A Mechanical Bull and Marriage Will Test Your LimitsI asked the operators if the mechanical bull was open for adults or only the teens. Every man is always asking, “Do I have what it takes?” I knew this was my test for the day. Moments later I had the Tim McGraw song in my head…”I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named…”I grabbed the rope tightly and clamped my knees down. Then I felt the slight shift in my groin and knew immediately I had an injury. I kept riding so I would not be exposed. Instead...
